The smallest room in your home will undoubtedly require the largest number of professionals to remodel. A plumber, tiler, electrician, flooring installer, painter and cabinet installer will be called on to transform your bathroom—unless you’re terribly talented, handy, and patient.
One of the first things you’ll consider when thinking about a bathroom remodel is the bath sinks. There are many styles of bath sinks to choose from today. You’re not limited to the standard white porcelain bowl. Your options are many, including glass, marble, granite or ceramic free-standing bowls to molded Corian and faux marble.
The elegant bathroom you’re designing will definitely need two sinks. You can place them next to each other on a long countertop set atop a beautiful cabinet. Or block out a place on each side of the room for a single sink. Each person will be able to use their sink without rubbing elbows.
Some redesigned bathrooms have the sink in front of a window to take advantage of the natural light. The traditional mirror is found, framed, on another wall.
With extra floor space, you might select two elegant pedestal sinks in either traditional or contemporary designs. Using pedestal sinks will make the room more open, but not provide storage space. So be sure to have cabinets handy!
The faucets on the sinks will serve as the jewelry for the room and should be chosen with great care.
Whether you select traditional polished chrome devonshire faucets or the newer styles of brushed nickel or antiqued bronze aberdeen faucets, these items will be the finishing touch on a major transformation.
Do you dream of a moen showhouse sunken whirlpool tub for leisurely soaking? Does your Victorian home require a claw-foot tub with a hand-held brass showerhead? The least expensive alternative is a pre-molded fiberglass unit which incorporates both shower and tub.
The next most important selection you’ll make is the toilet. There are almost as many choices for toilets as there are for sinks or tubs. If you want a vintage look, you can choose a pull-chain flushing mechanism. If you want ultra-modern, how about a remote-controlled model? There are models with a built-in bidet for saving precious floor space.
Decorating the bathroom, whether it means a fresh coat of paint or a total remodel or something in between, can be a fun and rewarding project. Plan well and be patient, and you’ll love the results.
