Furniture Shopping

There is a yearly mega furniture shopping exhibition that hubby doesn’t want to miss this weekend.

According to hubby, this mega furniture show lures millions of people from all over the world to see the latest styles and experience the future trend every year. Wow, people from all over the world!

To be honest, I am more concerned if there are special sales or free professional furniture shopping tips more than the latest styles. :-)

Besides, my furniture choices are still those made from wood.

Hubby suggests we go shopping for some discount furniture this evening. He seems to sense that I am in a bad mood today.

Yes, I am in a bad mood. But, I can’t really tell why I am so moody today. Maybe I am stressed out because of some overdue credit card payments. Phone calls from banks ring and ring.

Perhaps going shopping will make me feel better. I guess I should buy some sofa slip covers at the furniture exhibition too.

Wood has always been my choice when it comes to furniture shopping. I guess it’s because of its natural aroma and durability.

The first time I set my eyes on this Hunter Storage Bench, I fell in love with it. I am sure you will agree with me that it looks graceful and elegant.

This bench is made of rubberwood, a tropical hardwood descendent from the Maple family. It can be placed anywhere in your home.

The best part I love about this Hunter Storage Bench is that its convenient split seat allows you to access the inside storage compartment, even if someone is sitting on the other side of the bench.

Guess what I throw into the storage compartment? All my sweaters, magazines, blankets, old printers and more!

Tovolo Bamboo Outdoor Wine TableFor many centuries now, bamboo has acquired a reputation of being excellent building material for both inherent practicality and very striking natural-looking beauty.

Now a new trend is arising in placing tables and other furniture in one’s home with bamboo when going for furniture shopping. Among recliners, accent tables of all shapes and sizes, shelves, screens and more, the hand made tables are a particular favorite among bamboo lovers.

I bought this bamboo outdoor wine table when I was buying the computer ram the other day. This is a nice sturdy, compact picnic Bamboo Outdoor Wine Table. The wooden stake is long enough so the table is sturdy.

I have no problem using both plastic wine glasses and standard glass ones. The table is the perfect size for a small plate of cheese, etc.

It is easy to assemble and transport the Tovolo Bamboo Outdoor Wine Table. It also comes with a plastic carry bag. I’ve used it in our backyard, and at the beach.

Do you tend to put something anywhere there is room? Do you continue to buy until you fill up any space you have? If your home is overflowing with “things”, you might want to use some of our organizing strategies to find the right place for everything.

1. Skirted Tables. A skirted table can hide a myriad of things in almost any room of your house. You’ll need a tablecloth that goes to the floor. It can be something as simple as a large sheet that coordinates with your decor. For a really fashionable look, layer 2 or 3 different length cloths and trim one or all with decorative tassles, fringe, or beads.

Use any table you have, or put a plywood top over a base. You can buy a pre-cut round or rectangular plywood top at most home improvement centers.

Place your table top over a pre-cut base, small bookcase, low filing cabinet, or even trash can turned upside down. Camoflage your base of choice with a floor-length tablecloth.

The space hidden below the top can be used to store almost anything. Stack books or boxes, bedside clutter, or craft supplies underneath. Hide a television underneath and just lift the skirt to watch your favorite shows.

2. Furniture. When you’re shopping for furniture, think ahead to how you’ll use the piece. An armoire offers lots of shelves, yet looks wonderful in almost any room of the house.

A chest of drawers doesn’t have to be large, but can provide more storage than a side table. A coffee table with drawers can hide things that a beautiful glass-topped table could.

Choose a bench with a hinged lid for the end of a bed or under a window. Use the space inside to store blankets, sheets, extra towels, out-of-season clothes, or toys.

How good is that desk or bookcase you’re thinking of buying? How can you tell if the construction is sound, the drawers will work, the hardware is durable?

1. Feel the weight of drawers and doors. High-quality furniture has a sense of weight, scale and solidity to it.

2. Large cabinets, entertainment centers or sideboards should have leveling devices in the base. Keeping big items level is important because otherwise doors tend to stick.

3. There should be sash locks (metal latches) under the table leaves and table top.

4. When you buy wood furniture, drawers should work smoothly and should not bind when extended.

5. Drawer interiors should be smooth to the touch, sanded and sealed.

6. Glass shelves should be at least 3/8 inches thick and have plate grooves.

7. Better-end display and china cabinets should have halogen lighting, line switches and rheostats.
