Home Decorating / Storage Ideas

In the perfect home you’d have a place to put everything where it would either look beautiful or be out of sight until you needed it.If you have more “things” than you have space you’ll find some great storage ideas here. You’ll get suggestions for making the most of the space you have and find ways to create storage areas where you might not have thought.

Decide what you really want and need in each room by looking around the room for areas of storage. Look up, look down, under, and next to – your furniture, your bed, your closets, your cupboards. Any open space can be potential storage space for you.

For example, do you see an open space in a china cabinet, under a sofa table, or under an entry table? Use this space to stack wooden chests, beautifully covered cardboard boxes, or lidded baskets to store memorabilia, magazines, family photos, games, videos or computer disks.

Read on to find more ideas for finding storage space in your living space.

1. Look Up. There is probably nothing higher than 5 feet in your room, but there’s lots of space above. Install shelves 12″ to 18″ below the ceiling to display collectibles, tennis racquets, plants, hats, or photos.

2. Over the Window. Mount a shelf above the windows of the room for displaying things you don’t use but love to look at.

3. Wall Space. Find standard open wall shelves of any size at a home improvement center for an inexpensive storage solution for books and decorative objects such as babolat racquets.

A structured wall unit or entertainment center can house books and electronic equipment and provides space for decorative displays. If you’re going to stay in your home for a while, you might want to invest in custom-made shelves or cabinets. Any of these solutions gives lots of storage space without protruding too much into the living area.

4. Behind Closed Doors. It’s ideal not to have to look at your things such as k swiss tennis shoes you’re storing, unless they’re decorative. Increase available storage space by enclosing shelves and cupboards behind doors. Instead of using an open one, choose a bookcase with doors.

For most people, they can count the times they redecorate their homes in a lifetime on one hand. It’s a shame because this is not because they don’t have great ideas about how they want their homes to be, but that the thought of redecorating brings the following obstacles to mind:

Where to put up if I am renovating?

I have accumulated a lot of furniture and household items, how in the world can we integrate them with this ultra modern design I am interested in?

We have spent all that money doing up the place when we moved in and now we have to do away with it? What a waste.

It’s one big financial outlay!

But our tastes change, moods change over time. New notions inspire us even after we completed our renovations. Is there a way to invest in our homes in a flexible, relaxing and manageable way? To be able to afford stylish home transformations year after year?

The rules of interior decorating can be as solid as a rock or as open to interpretation as the sky. But many experts agree that learning the rules can be the first step toward freely breaking those rules when necessary. Here are some of the decorating dos.

1. Do sketch your floorplan and record the room dimensions, window sizes and placement, and the location of special features, electrical outlets, and so on.

Take your floorplan with you when you shop.

2. Do take the time to discover your personal style by reading shelter magazines, attending showhouses, and browsing online and in stores to learn what styles and colors really appeal to you.

3. Do identify the focal point of the room (a fireplace, a view, a bed, an armoire).

4. Do define a room’s style in writing , being specific. Not just “country French”, but “French Country with a rooster motif, chicken wire cupboard fronts, and a color scheme that includes black and gold.”

Try stylish slipcovers to makeover a room. They can accomplish miracles on nearly every type of upholstered furniture. Consumers often turn to slipcovers after getting expensive bids on reupholstering, but that’s not the only reason to use them.

They easily hide unattractive upholstery but can also be used to add a dash of color, fresh style, or a seasonal holiday mood to a room.

Today you’ll find them in beautiful washable cottons, comfy denims, luxurious velvets, cozy chenilles, leather looks, and more.

Here are some tips on using slipcovers in your home.

1. Harmonize a roomful of mismatched furniture by slipcovering everything in matching or coordinating covers.

2. Try out a shabby chic look by covering furniture in white slipcovers. If the original upholstery color shows through, try putting a white sheet over the furniture to camouflage the fabric underneath.

3. Add some style and color to plain folding chairs by slipcovering them to match your dining room chairs. You’ll have attractive extra seating for very little expense.

4. Slipcovers instantly makeover “inherited” furniture. If you love your parent’s old sofa — but not the gold Herculon fabric — simply order a new slipcover and enjoy a gorgeous red sofa or any color you desire instead.

5. Even recliners, wing chairs, and ottomans can now be slipcovered in your choice of fabrics. Try some matching pillows too.

6. Secure a slipcover with a tucking tool that inserts a plastic channel deep into the corners to hold fabric from shifting.

7. Decorate your dining room for parties and special occasions with special slipcovers to cover every day wear and tear.

8. Add warmth to rentals, apartments, or temporary quarters with bright colorful slipcovers.

9. Consider your personal style before selecting a slipcover. Ruffled skirts and gathered arms might be your choice, or go for a simpler, contemporary look with straight skirts and tab tie closures.

10.Slipcovers are often made to be “no iron” by stretching them over your furniture while still warm from the dryer.

A common furniture shopping mistake is buying a sofa and discovering that it won’t fit through the door or into the elevator.

Sofa is probably the largest piece of furniture in your main living area, it could look lonely all by itself, a big glob of fabric-covered seating. And when you’re sitting at a sofa, you’ll undoubtedly want a place to put things like magazines or drinks so that you can reach them easily.

But there are options for a piece of furniture in front of a sofa that can provide storage, a flat surface for decorative pieces, or just a nice break in the look of upholstered furniture.

Here are some of the suggestions for a piece of furniture to place in front of the sofa.

A Coffee Table. Coffee tables are available in all sorts of sizes, heights, and metal, glass, painted, or natural wood finishes. A traditional coffee table can have a glass top, can be solid wood, or can be made out of metal or finished with a high gloss to shine as the center of attention in the room.

A coffee table should be chosen in a proper proportion for the size of the room and the sofa in front of which it stands. A large square room would look strange with a small, delicate oval glass-topped coffee table, just as a small room would be cramped with a large, heavy, dark-painted square coffee table.

Before buying a coffee table, place a large piece of newsprint or brown on the floor in front of the sofa to help determine an appropriate size and shape. You can cut down the paper or add to it until you get the right proportion for the rest of the furniture and the room.

When shopping for a coffee table, take the measurements of the sofa with you, in addition to a floor plan of the room and the measurements you’ve determined will be best. You may have difficulty finding just the right size, but this will help.

A Coffee Table Ottoman. By combining the top of a table with cushions of an ottoman, you’ll get the comfort for resting your feet and the convenience of space to place items. Usually with this type of design, the ottoman cushions pull out from below the table top, meaning you can use both the top and the cushions at the same time.

A Large Ottoman. As homeowners are gearing furniture selections to comfort, the ottoman has taken center stage in front of many sofas. Really, an ottoman is just a large padded or upholstered stool or bench.

It’s a perfect piece to use in front of a sofa, as its soft top offers comfort for legs, the upholstery fabric contributes color and texture to the room, and the large flat to is ideal for placing a tray or books.

A Pair of Small Tables. Two small square tables, placed side by side, give a slightly more formal look than the more modern large coffee table. A matched pair looks best, but a mismatched set of small tables, of exactly the same height, can be used together with matching tops. If you have a pair of small antique tables, this may be the perfect place to use them.

A Picnic Bench. For a very rustic or cottage style home, a long, low, wooden bench is a perfect touch. The long flat top works well for placing books and beverages without adding too much formality.

An Old Dining Table. This is the perfect place to put a dining table. Of course, you’ll need to cut the legs down to the proper height (between 15″ and 22″) for your seating space, but the large surface will be convenient for many purposes, including playing games, doing homework, and entertaining.

You can see that you can use almost anything for a coffee table. Keep in mind that the piece should be sturdy, properly proportioned, and durable, and it will give you great wear and convenience in any room.
